The end of Act One

Towards the end of The Crucible, Betty all of a sudden awakens from the witch craft that was cast upon her and her and Abby together begin accusing people of witch craft. Right when Parris does not want anyone to know what has happened with betty and abby.


Abigail: "I saw Goody Hawkins with the Devil!"
Betty: "I saw Goody Bibber with the Devil!"
Abigail: "I saw Goody Booth with the Devil!"

1. Why exactly does Abby begin to accuse other people of witch-craft?

    I think Abigail starts to name random people for witchcraft to veer the attention away from her and her friends dancing in the woods. She doesn't want to be revealed for the harlot and delinquent she is so she chooses to condemn people in her place.
    It also could be a means for her to enact her eventual revenge on Goody Proctor.
